Problem

  • Poor nighttime visibility

Over time, conventional guardrails corrode or become coated with dust and exhaust fumes, and no longer reflect headlight beams properly. When guardrails cannot be seen at night or in bad weather, drivers can leave the road on sharp curves or along steep drop-offs, causing fatal accidents.

  • Rising traffic accidents in road work zones

Aging guardrails are typically replaced by workers who remove guardrail sections weighing about 100 kg by hand and install new ones. Traffic accidents in road work zones increase every year, and close to 20 people lose their lives annually on average. Workers and drivers alike are exposed to the risk of accidents.

  • Inefficient manual replacement

Manual guardrail replacement leads to higher construction costs, traffic congestion, and increased carbon emissions from vehicles idling in traffic jams. Because guardrails are replaced periodically due to corrosion and collisions, the same costs, congestion, and carbon emissions recur again and again.

Product

A high-efficiency retroreflective paint
that delivers 100%+ nighttime visibility.

  • High-efficiency retroreflective paint

We have turned retroreflective technology, which sends headlight beams back to the driver at night to improve visibility, into a paint.

  • Retroreflective guardrail

A lifeline for roads at night that makes guardrails, once invisible in the dark, visible to drivers.

  • AI-based dedicated automated painting equipment

Identifies the position of the guardrail and any damage, models the optimal painting path based on pressure, coating uniformity, and speed, and then paints automatically.

Specular and diffuse reflection vs. retroreflection

Specular reflectionMirror-like surface

Specular reflection: Mirror-like surfaceLight from a car headlight strikes a smooth, tilted surface and bounces off upward. It does not return toward the headlight.

Light bounces off at the angle of the surface and does not return toward the headlight.

RetroreflectionRetroreflective surface

Retroreflection: Retroreflective surfaceLight from the same headlight strikes a retroreflective surface set at the same angle and returns in a narrow beam toward the headlight, the direction it came from. The driver sits just behind the headlight, so the surface appears bright.

Light returns the way it came, back toward the headlight.

  • Light returning to the headlight

Replacement process vs. painting process

AS-IS

Replace steel panels

Comes with cost, time, work-zone hazards and waste.

  1. Paint fades and rust sets in, so the guardrail can no longer do its job well.

  2. Close the lane and position a crane truck to lift the panels.

  3. Take the existing steel panels off one at a time.

  4. Bring in new steel panels and mount them.

  5. Haul away the removed panels as scrap metal and waste.

Repaint in place

The steel panels stay in place; only the surface is recoated.

  1. Paint fades and rust sets in, so the guardrail can no longer do its job well.

  2. Close off the work zone and mount the automated painting unit on the guardrail.

  3. The unit travels along the guardrail, applying retroreflective coating.

  4. The panels stay in place; the goal is to maintain them by washing from then on.

  • Cost reduction

    Reduces construction costs by cutting
replacement work and traffic control time.

  • Shorter construction period

    Delivers faster installation than
    conventional guardrail replacement work.

  • Carbon reduction

    Reduces steel production, waste,
    logistics, and idling time
    to prevent unnecessary carbon emissions.

  • Nighttime visibility

    Uses high-efficiency retroreflective paint
    to secure unmatched
    nighttime visibility.
